Job Description
PLEASE NOTE:This is a new, full-time one-year term position with possibility of extension. Initial consideration will be given to applications received prior to Monday, July 14, 2014. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.

NCAR - High Altitude Observatory (HAO)

BASIC JOB FUNCTION: Performs scientific research in solar physics and observational operations that support the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) mission and the strategic vision for HAO and NCAR as described in the current HAO and NCAR Strategic Plans. Pursues data analysis and research with a focus on the magneto-thermal coupling between the lower solar atmosphere and the heliosphere. Participates in project planning with senior scientific staff and works with other team members, including postdoctoral visitors and students. Submits research efforts to refereed journals and presents results at scientific meetings. Supports the wider community and public via service and education and outreach activities. Serves as a Co-Investigator or Principal Investigator on grant proposals and collaborative projects. Participates in scientific planning activities for the Solar Transients and Space Weather (STSW) section of the High Altitude Observatory (HAO).
DUTIES INCLUDE:

Performs research into the processes which govern how the Sun's lower atmosphere couples to the heliosphere. In particular, develops an improved understanding of the magnetically forced mass and energy transport through the Sun''s chromosphere and into the heliosphere.
Performs scientific data analysis for research applications. Develops post processing and graphical display tools using scientific display languages in order to display and analyze observational results.
Prepares scholarly papers and presents results at scientific conferences and workshops.
Interacts with NCAR scientists and scientists at other institutions on collaborative projects.
Performs scientific planning activities in support of the IRIS mission.

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

Education and
Experience:

Ph.D. in a relevant science; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated experience in observational spectroscopy of high energy plasmas. An initial record of publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presentations at scientific conferences is required.
Basic knowledge of numerical methods in astrophysics or the atmospheric sciences.Ability to work with complicated numerical models and large scientific data sets in a Unix environment using languages such as C, Fortran, Matlab, Python, and IDL. Excellent skills in writing scientific reports and articles.
Excellent communication skills in presenting research results.
Experience in writing and developing proposals.

DESIRED (but not required):

Knowledge of parallel computing and programming.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
