Research Chemist, ZP-1320-II (equivalent GS-07/09)
The incumbent will support forensic science research and development within the Applied Chemicals and Materials Division at NIST and support ongoing research projects in breath analysis and fire debris analysis. The main responsibility is to perform headspace sampling experiments with a custom-built instrument and samples that include plant-derived aroma compounds, fuel surrogates, fuels, and simulated fire debris. These experiments require laboratory work, data acquisition with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, data analysis, and meticulous documentation. Experimental work will be conducted under close supervision by project leaders, with opportunities to apply advanced statistical methods for data analysis. Basic Requirements Degree:
physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. IN ADDITION:
To qualify, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level (or ZP-II at NIST). Specialized experience working in a laboratory environment. OR 1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement NOTE:
Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable. Superior Academic Achievement is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. 1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses. 2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
