Incumbent will contribute to a team committed to developing, maintaining, and operating primary and secondary frequency standards. Incumbent will also contribute to maintaining and improving the high-availability and performance of the UTC(NIST) time scale (official source of time and frequency in the U.S.) and its distributed output signals. Incumbent will develop data acquisition hardware, control and data acquisition software, and analysis techniques with the goal of obtaining optimal levels of performance from primary and secondary frequency standards. Incumbent will help to support scientific research conducted by NIST and external collaborators which depend on primary frequency standards for absolute frequency measurements. Incumbent will be encouraged to develop new technology for use in general operations, and to seek opportunities for beneficial collaboration with researchers in government, academia, and industry. Basic Requirements:
A. Degree:
physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience with atomic physics, laser spectroscopy and cooling, high-resolution measurement of timing signals, mixed-signal electronics, microwave electronics, vacuum systems, scientific apparatus, and software engineering with an emphasis on instrument control, data acquisition, analysis, and visualization. OR Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
